How Much Does It Cost to Record a Song in Essex?
Recording Studio · 5 min read
If you’re a band or solo artist in Colchester wondering what a studio session actually costs, the honest answer is: it depends on how you book — but it’s probably more affordable than you think.
Most studios charge per hour or per day. Per-hour suits quick jobs — a single, a demo, a couple of overdubs. Per-day usually works out cheaper for a full band or EP. At Black Cactus, every recording rate is all-inclusive: studio hire, a dedicated producer/engineer for the whole session, and access to our full equipment library.
Our best advice before you book: rehearse until the songs are tight, ideally to a click. Studio time spent learning your own parts is the most expensive time there is. If you want to get session-ready, our rehearsal rooms start at £12/hr with backline and PA included, and we can handle mixing and mastering once tracking is done.

The Meffs: How Colchester’s Punk Duo Recorded at Black Cactus
Recording Studio · 4 min read
Colchester’s grassroots scene punches well above its weight, and few acts capture that energy like The Meffs. We’re proud to have been part of their journey, and prouder still to co-produce Meff-Fest, their annual festival, alongside Colchester Events.
Working with local artists is the whole point of what we do — a studio is only as good as the scene around it. If you’re an Essex band ready to capture your sound properly, the same rooms and engineers are open to you.
