What Actually Happens in a Recording Session? Syncopate's Studio Diary

Never recorded before? Follow Colchester band Syncopate through their sessions at Black Cactus Studio, from scratch tracks and drums to guitars and vocals.

If you've never been in a studio, it's hard to picture what the days look like. Colchester band Syncopate shared their progress while recording three new singles with us, so here's how it went.

Day 1: scratch and drums

First up, scratch tracks for all three songs. These are rough guide takes so everyone can play along to the song's shape. Then drums, all three done on day one, and the first bass part.

Drums go first because everything else locks to them. Get them right and the rest of the session goes much faster.

Day 3: guitars and vocals

By day three, rhythm guitar was finished on all three songs and Seth had the vocals for To See You sorted. As the band put it, guitarist Flynn was finally playing instead of spectating.

A few surprises

We keep a range of instruments in the studio, so if a song needs something different, it's there. That includes a banjo, which proved a bit of a distraction for one band member.

Syncopate also made the final of this year's Battle of the Bands, so it's been a busy year for them.

Planning your own session?

Every band is different, but drums first, then bass, guitars and vocals is a good plan for most. Read our guide on preparing for your first recording session, then give us a call.
