East Town Pirates spent June in the studio making a new EP. Four tracks of what they call Voodoo Pirate Rock 'n' Roll, and it needed a bit of dirt on it.
Why an old Tascam?
AJ ran the sessions through the preamps on an old 90s Tascam deck. Modern gear is clean and accurate, which is great for a lot of music. But a rock 'n' roll band wants some grit and warmth, and older analogue preamps give you that before you've touched a plugin.
It's one of the reasons we keep a mix of old and new kit at Black Cactus. The right box for the job usually gets you closer to the sound in your head than any amount of processing afterwards.
Comfortable enough to nap in
We try to make the studio relaxed. Maybe too relaxed. One of our favourite clips this year is the Pirates recording in the background while somebody had a sneaky sleep on the sofa. Not staged, we promise.
If your band wants a recording with real character, get in touch and tell us the records you love. We'll pick the gear to match.
