In its short life as a studio, Black Cactus Studio has already morphed into a diverse and inclusive community hub for local bands to practice and record ahead of gigs.
It is also the go-to place for session singers, podcasters, and voice over artists to record and hone their craft, as well as music and drama teachers to tutor students.
Founded in early 2020 by guitarist and sound engineer Alan Jones, Black Cactus Studio is a new, three-storey multi-purpose facility for artists of all genres to stimulate their creative projects.
“The idea is Black Cactus Studio becomes a place for artistic freedom which can operate without limitations.”Alan Jones – Founder
Alan has ten years’ experience in the music industry, having studied a BA in Popular Music at University of Northampton and advanced music recording techniques under the mentorship of acclaimed producer Tony Platt (AC/DC, Bob Marley).
He has also worked as a professional, touring crew member and sound engineer for artists such as KISS, the Spice Girls, Liam Gallagher and Michelle Obama at venues and festivals including the O2 Arena, Wembley Arena and Glastonbury.
As a guitarist, in the Colchester band SURGE, Alan has also toured up and down the country, supporting bands and headlining shows at a vast variety of established music venues.
He has also had a hand in the band’s self-produced music videos, self-organised live events, such as their sold-out shows in London, and the composition of the band’s singles, which received airplay on Radio X and BBC Introducing.
This regional and national airplay also led to the group, and Alan, being invited to play at major music festivals, like Reading Festival, Camden Rocks Festival, and the Isle of Wight Festival.
This was all achieved through the unsigned band’s dedication to self- management, which is an area Alan is passionate about, along with wanting to give post-release guidance to bands.
